Page Type Brainstorming
This page contains notes about thoughts and considerations while developing the Wiki Page Types and the Page Type Uses.
Page Type
- Capture Page
- A wiki page where new notes are captured. Often it is a copy/paste from a website or email
- The goal is to be able to capture a note in less than 60 seconds so as to not interrupt what you were doing when you had the idea
- It contains just enough info to remind you of what it is and why you captured it
- Every evening, before ending your day, you should remove everything from your capture page to another page (existing or new)
- Users will see an indicator on their home page showing the quantity of capture notes waiting to be filed.
- Study Page
- Notes taken while following some structured learning (book, lecture, online course, etc.)
- The page includes a metadata citation and link to the original material
- Notes could be copy/paste, but will be much more valuable if you put them into your own words
- If you are studying a subject that you already have other pages on, you will likely have multiple wiki pages open while learning, because you will want to note everything that resonates in the Study page, and also add relevant content to each other page. And you will likely be organizing as well.
- Entity Page (or Reference Page)
- Typically associated with a person, place, or thing
- Very often are copy/paste, because your goal is just to capture what you need and where to go to find more
- Examples: Short Term Goals, Espresso Machine, Concerts I've Seen
- Journal Page
- A note about your experience or perception
- They differ from Reference Notes and Idea Notes because their value is often chronological and contextual rather than conceptual.
- Examples: Daily journal, Vacation journal, habit tracker
- Idea Page
- Typically associated with a thought or concept that relates to multiple aspects of your life
- Ideally, every one should have links to at least two other wiki pages
- They represent synthesis rather than merely storage; they transform your note-taking system into a web of knowledge
- Examples: Personal Organization, Goal Setting, Travel Journaling
- Project Page
- Notes associated with a particular output, such as an article, presentation, research paper, or event.
- Projects can have phases: Gathering Information, Actively Working, On Hold, Archived, Completed

Page Status
Every page should have a status.
- Active: the default status for all pages
- For a Study note, this would indicate you are currently reading the book or taking the course
- Pending:
- All pages with type = Capture will have Status = Pending
- Study notes for planned or potential learning
- Project notes for projects you are spending less than one hour per week
- Completed: only used by Study and Project Pages
- Archived: pages you don't expect to edit or reference ever again; by default these are not included in searches
Uses of Page Status
- When you search, you can check a box to also include Archived.
