Wiki Page Properties

This pages contains notes about the idea of categorizing every wiki page with a type that will be used in workflows, alerts, reports, gamification, reminders, leader boards, etc. It would add the most value if I made a mandatory rule that every page must have one and only one type classification.

Page Type

  • Capture Note
    • A wiki page where new notes are captured. Often it is a copy/paste from a website or email
    • The goal is to be able to capture a note in less than 60 seconds so as to not interrupt what you were doing when you had the idea
    • It contains just enough info to remind you of what it is and why you captured it
    • Every evening, before ending your day, you should remove everything from your capture page to another page (existing or new)
    • Users will see an indicator on their home page showing the quantity of capture notes waiting to be filed.
  • Study Note
    • Notes taken while following some structured learning (book, lecture, online course, etc.)
    • The page includes a metadata citation and link to the original material
    • Notes could be copy/paste, but will be much more valuable if you put into your own words
  • Entity Note (or Reference Note)
    • Typically associated with a person, place, or thing
    • Very often are copy/paste, because your goal is just to capture what you need and where to go to find more
    • Examples: Short Term Goals, Espresso Machine, Concerts I've Seen
  • Journal Note
    • A note about your experience or perception
    • They differ from Reference Notes and Idea Notes because their value is often chronological and contextual rather than conceptual.
    • Examples: Daily journal, Vacation journal, habit tracker
  • Idea Note
    • Typically associated with a thought or concept that relates to multiple aspects of your life
    • Ideally, every one should have links to at least two other wiki pages
    • They represent synthesis rather than merely storage; they transform your note-taking-system into a web-of-knowledge
    • Examples: Personal Organization, Goal Setting, Travel Journaling
  • Project Note
    • Notes associated with a particular output, such as an article, presentation, research paper, or event.
    • Projects can have phases: Gathering Information, Actively Working, On Hold, Archived, Completed
Page Type Purpose Expected behavior
Capture Note Temporary inbox for quickly captured information Process soon
Study Note Notes derived from a source or structured learning Cite source; summarize in own words
Reference Note Information about a person, place, thing, event, list, or practical subject Maintain as needed
Idea Note A concept, conclusion, insight, or synthesized thought Connect to multiple other pages
Project Note Information supporting an intended outcome Track progress of multiple, related tasks
Journal Note Chronological experience or reflection Associate with date/context

Page Status

Every page should have a status.

  • Active: the default status for all pages
    • For a Study note, this would indicate you are currently reading the book or taking the course
  • Pending:
    • All pages with type = Capture will have Status = Pending
    • Study notes for planned or potential learning
    • Project notes for projects you are spending less than one hour per week
  • Completed: only used by Study and Project notes
  • Archived: pages you don't expect to edit or reference ever again; by default these are not included in searches
